Plastic surgical procedures are of two general components: cosmetic and reconstructive. The following definitions were adopted by the American Medical Association (AMA) in June, 1989, and has been published in the AMA Policy Compendium, 1994 edition, 475.992:
Reconstructive Surgery Reconstructive Surgery is performed on abnormal structures of the body, caused by congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumors, or disease. It is generally performed to improve function, but may also be performed to approximate a normal appearance.
Special Programs Special Programs are areas of plastic surgery that require a greater degree of knowledge and experience; areas for which Dr. Ariyan has been internationally recognized as an expert.
Cosmetic Surgery*
Cosmetic Surgery is performed to reshape normal structures of the body in order to improve the patient's appearance. *At this time, Dr. Ayrian's practice does not include cosmetic surgery.
