Isolated Limb Perfusions |

Many cancers that recur in the upper or lower extremities often require treatment with the amputation of the affected arm or leg. This leads to significant disability.
One of the limb-sparing treatments requires a highly special surgical procedure
to perfuse the arm or leg with a single very high dose of chemotherapy while the
extremity is "isolated" from the rest of the body with a cardiac pump oxygenator.
This permits the treatment to be performed with safety by preventing the high
doses of the drug from entering the rest of the circulation of the body. In this
fashion, the recurrent cancer can be treated, and the arm or leg can be
preserved for normal function. Thus, the patient can be treated with a single
course of chemotherapy, with a short hospital stay, and an early return to work.
This technique is available through Dr. Ariyan's office, and has been the only
available source for the greater part of the New England region for the past 20
years.
